Job Description

£55,000 – £60,000 plus bonus and profit share

We’re looking for an outstanding engineer to lead the engineering function of The Green Bus and Birmingham Busworks, our specialist seatbelting business.

The Green Bus is a leading provider of bus services in the West Midlands. Our value-added school bus product is growing organically as demand for our services has increased, and we’re planning further expansion into Warwickshire and Staffordshire. We currently operate 42 double-decker buses which are maintained by an in-house team. We expect to operate 60-80 Euro VI buses by the time of the Commonwealth Games in summer 2022.

Birmingham Busworks specialises in retrofitting seatbelts to double deckers. We hold pull test certificates for the Wrightbus Gemini, and we aim to add the ADL E400 to our range during 2021. Our small team is based at Miller Street in Birmingham and we aim to expand the Birmingham Busworks business substantially over the next two years.

As our Chief Engineer, you’ll be responsible for:

  • ensuring that The Green Bus fleet is safe and reliable; maintaining excellent records; exceeding the standards required by DVSA
  • providing line management support to our Compliance Managers and operations staff
  • achieving Earned Recognition within 12 months of appointment
  • upgrading our fleet to the Euro VI emissions standard
  • leading the growth of Birmingham Busworks by building close relationships with customers; guiding and supporting the Busworks team; and managing income and expenditure budgets
  • securing pull-test passes for a wide range of bus types according to customer demand

We’re looking for an ambitious, hands-on, and motivated Chief Engineer who:

  • works effectively at board level and on the shop floor
  • sets high standards and achieves them consistently
  • can lead and motivate two separate teams of staff
  • has a good working knowledge of Construction and Use and PSVAR legislation
  • builds good external relationships, such as with DVSA and our pull-testing partners

In return, we’re offering a basic salary of £55,000 – £60,000 depending on your experience and knowledge; private healthcare; and a profit share in Birmingham Busworks. We may offer equity in Birmingham Busworks for a candidate with exceptional C&U knowledge and seatbelting experience.
