First Bus
Network Officer (Scheduler)
In 2008, I achieved promotion to the role of Scheduler, and I was responsible for timetable optimisation, compiling registration documents for The Traffic Commissioner, bus and crew scheduling within the First Bus Networks in Central Scotland, The Lothians and Borders. I established a good working relationship with internal stakeholders, mainly Depot Operations Management and Trade Union Representatives. My everyday work involved using software for crew duty scheduling, bus scheduling and timetable production. I regularly updated relevant KPIs for schedule changes including paid hours and mileage statistics. One of the most noteworthy projects I was involved in was the August 2018 network redesign for West Lothian, Falkirk and Stirling and the main objective of this review was to provide quicker journey times and improved or simplified frequencies for our customers to three of the largest towns within the network. This also involved scheduling some complex scenarios including the coordination of multiple routes on certain corridors to provide journeys at frequent intervals. During the Covid-19 pandemic, I introduced strategies at short-notice to ensure the business model complied with customer needs and regulations. In 2021, I returned to the Glasgow business where I had to upskill to a change in software which allowed me to explore more options resulting in an improvement to Crew Duty efficiency. I further developed my scheduling skills by creating a variety of rosters for the depots that I was responsible for. In 2023, an AI timetabling system was introduced to the business which had the technology to generate historical running time data and it allowed me to optimise revised timetables.

First Bus
Bus Stop Information Officer
In this role, I produced timetable information using software to be displayed at bus stops throughout Greater Glasgow, Edinburgh, Midlothian and East Lothian. This allowed me to build up a vast geographical knowledge which proved to be beneficial to my proceeding role. I also liaised on a regular basis and enjoyed a good working relationship with external stakeholders such as Strathclyde Partnership For Transport and various local authorities. In 2005, I achieved an SVQ in team leading as part of the ‘First into Management’ programme.
